Debate over the legitimacy of a potential war with Iran has opened a significant rift within President Donald Trump’s core conservative coalition.

After sharply attacking Pope Leo XIV and posting an AI-generated image that depicted himself as Jesus, Trump moved quickly to appear at a high-profile Bible-reading event as signs grew that Catholic conservatives were drifting away.

Blasphemy Backlash Threatens 50 Million Conservative Voters

Coverage in international media and shifts in domestic political circles suggest the situation is volatile. Major U.S. outlets such as Politico warn that Trump’s recent, increasingly erratic behavior risks becoming self-inflicted political damage.

The episode began with a post on Truth Social on the 13th.

Trump lashed out at Pope Leo XIV—who had described the Iran war as inhumane—calling the pontiff weak on crime and terrible on foreign policy. He then posted an AI-generated image that portrayed him as Jesus.

The move provoked an immediate backlash. Some 50 million Catholic voters in the United States form a potent swing bloc that can decide contests in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Traditional Catholic conservatives expressed outrage, saying the insult to the pope and the sacrilegious imagery crossed a clear line.

Experts warn this is not a fleeting incident. Republican strategists are concerned that if even 10% of moderate Catholic conservatives in key swing states turn away, the broader electoral map could shift dramatically.

When early signs of slipping support surfaced, the White House moved to contain the fallout. As criticism mounted, Trump quietly deleted the Jesus image from his social accounts.

A few days later, he turned up at the “America Reads the Bible” marathon reading—appearing like a closer when the event began at 9 a.m. on the 19th.

The appearance was a rapid attempt to blunt the religious anger sparked by the pope insult and the image, replacing controversy with a performance of piety in under a week.

Trump pre-recorded a passage from 2 Chronicles chapter 7, which he planned to broadcast on the 21st. Evangelical conservatives regard this passage—about repenting and God healing the land—as especially sacred.

The verse—promising that God will heal the land if people abandon evil ways and repent—was notably recited by supporters during the 2021 Capitol attack and carries heavy symbolic weight for many on the right.

Administration officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegses, participated in large numbers, underscoring that the event was a calculated effort to consolidate evangelical support.

Effectively, the White House appears to have deployed staunch evangelical conservatives as a religious counterweight to neutralize Catholic criticism of the Iran war.

Washington is now watching closely to see whether the administration’s turn to religion as a political tool will reknit the fraying conservative coalition—or deepen the internal wounds.
