Choo Kyung-ho and Yoo Young-ha will face off in the final runoff for the People Power Party’s nomination for Daegu mayor. The party’s nomination committee said on April 17 that preliminary primary results confirmed the two would advance to the main primary.
The committee held a two-day preliminary primary for six candidates beginning April 15. The contest weighted votes 70% from registered party members and 30% from public opinion polls. Yoon Jae-ok, Choi Eun-seok, Lee Jae-man and Hong Seok-jun were eliminated, leaving Choo and Yoo as the finalists.
Following its rules for managing primaries, the committee said it would not disclose the precise vote shares of the top two finishers. The finalists now face the task of sustaining momentum while working to consolidate support from the eliminated candidates’ backers.
The race intensifies on April 19 with a primary debate. Campaigning will continue before party members and citizens vote on April 24 and 25, and the party plans to announce the Daegu mayoral nominee on April 26.
Local political analysts are watching whether Daegu voters will favor Choo — a former deputy prime minister with significant administrative experience — or Yoo, who carries symbolic weight as a close ally of former President Park Geun-hye.
