Iran must negotiate in good faith to reach a long-term agreement
After the United States and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said on April 8 (local time) that the truce remains fragile and that President Donald Trump is pressing for rapid progress.
According to Reuters and AFP, Vance, speaking during a visit to Hungary, welcomed the ceasefire but urged Iran to negotiate in good faith to secure a long-term agreement.
Vance said the president had instructed him and the entire negotiating team to \”earnestly reach an agreement.\” He added that if Iran negotiates sincerely with the United States, a durable settlement to end hostilities is possible.
He warned that if Iran does not engage seriously in talks, it will learn that the U.S. president is not idle, reiterating that Trump wants to see swift progress.
The ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan, is to last two weeks. The parties plan to meet in Islamabad on the 10th for negotiations. Vance has been mentioned as a potential lead of the U.S. negotiating team for talks aimed at ending hostilities with Iran.
