U.S. President Donald Trump said that, given a little more time, “we can easily reopen the Strait of Hormuz, seize the oil and make a lot of money.”
Trump posted the claim on his Truth Social account on the 3rd (local time).
He added, “Would that be a ‘GUSHER’ of oil for the world?”
In the post, Trump did not explain how he would restore normal transit through the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran currently blocks, nor did he specify which oil supplies he meant could be seized.
Analysts say he likely posted the message to send markets an optimistic signal that the Strait of Hormuz could reopen soon, even as the U.S. military conducts high-intensity strikes against Iran.
Earlier, in a nationwide address on the 1st, Trump said that when the conflict ends the strait would “naturally reopen,” and warned that a resumption of oil flows would push prices sharply lower and lift stock markets.
The following day he asserted that the destructive strikes intended to “send Iran back to the Stone Age” had “not even begun,” and he urged that Iran’s new leadership “knows what must happen” and that it must occur swiftly.
By “what must happen,” Trump was referring to reopening the Strait of Hormuz and related measures.
