Chungbuk National University appears set to hold its presidential election on June 25, more than two months after the post became vacant.
On the 24th, the university said its Presidential Appointment Recommendation Committee (the committee) voted to schedule the election for the institution’s 23rd president on June 25.
The committee selected that date after taking into account a law that prohibits outsourced elections during the period from 60 days before a local election until 20 days after it.
Once the university’s Election Management Committee finalizes the date in consultation with the recommendation committee, officials will determine the voting method and the weighting of votes, then announce the election, open a 10-day candidate registration period, and allow 14 days of campaigning before voting.
Typically, the two leading vote-getters are forwarded to the Ministry of Education as the first- and second-ranked nominees, and the ministry then appoints one of them as president.
No one has formally declared a candidacy so far, but roughly six faculty members have been named as potential contenders.
Prof. Gu Young-wan (Department of Economics), Prof. Kim Bo-rim (Department of History Education), Prof. Seo Yong-seok (Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences), Prof. Lee Jae-eun (Department of Public Administration), Prof. Im Dal-ho (Department of International Business), and Prof. Hong Ki-nam (Department of Civil Engineering) have been mentioned.
