Government Support for Key Mineral Materials: Why Yeongwol’s Development Projects Matter in 2023

On June 10th, Choi Myung-seo, the mayor of Yeongwol County in Gangwon Province, met with government officials to request support for key mineral material complexes and other major local projects.
According to Yeongwol County officials, Mayor Choi and his team met with representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Finance, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport the previous day. They discussed local initiatives and advocated for their inclusion in the federal budget.
Specifically, they requested maximum support through general grants to facilitate large-scale projects with significant financial needs. These projects include the advanced industry key mineral material complex and the development of Yeongwol’s 4th Industrial Complex. They also sought special grants to create a safe living environment and improve disaster safety measures.
Mayor Choi and county officials also exchanged views with government representatives on the progress of the Jecheon-Yeongwol Expressway construction. They discussed the preliminary feasibility study for the 6th National Road and Local Road Construction Plan, which includes Section 3 of National Route 31 from Yeongwol to Bangrim.
A county spokesperson stated, “Following our engagement with federal agencies, we plan to strengthen our collaboration with the National Assembly and Gangwon Provincial Government. We will continue our proactive approach to establish Yeongwol as a pivotal city in southern Gangwon.”
