On February 10, Jeong Wang-ryong, Vice Chairman of Policy for the Democratic Party of Korea, officially announced his candidacy for mayor of Gimpo during a press conference at the Gimpo City Council briefing room.
[The Fact | Gimpo = Jeong Il-hyung] Jeong declared, “This local election is a crucial opportunity to fully eradicate the shadow of internal conflict and activate democracy in our daily lives. I aim to transform Gimpo into a key city driving the success of the Lee Jae-myung administration.”
Jeong highlighted his core pledge to initiate a major overhaul of the city’s transportation system.
He emphasized, “To address the congestion issues of the Gimpo Gold Line, I will advocate for the extension of Line 5 and Incheon Line 2. Additionally, I plan to convert the urban section of the Gyeyang Expressway into an underground route, fostering a more pedestrian-friendly city.”
Unveiling his strategy for future industries, Jeong stated, “I intend to revitalize Cinepolis as a hub for MICE, media, and tourism industries. By attracting five-star hotels along the Han River and a branch of the National Taekwondo Center, we’ll elevate Gimpo’s status as an international city. We also aim to develop Aegibong and the Han River estuary as centers for peace and eco-tourism.”
Regarding cultural and marine tourism, Jeong added, “We’ll transform the Rabeniče Golden Waterway into Gimpo’s signature waterfront cultural space. Baengmado and Aramarina will be developed into vibrant centers for youth culture and festivals.” He also committed to establishing a Livelihood Economy Support Center and promoting social enterprises to boost the local economy.
Furthermore, Jeong proposed nurturing the Han River 2 Compact City and the Daegok Environmental Regeneration Innovation Complex as self-sustaining growth hubs. He also pledged to revitalize stalled development projects to inject new life into the local construction sector.
Jeong asserted, “As Lee Jae-myung leads the country, I will lead Gimpo. We’ll make Gimpo the launchpad for Korea’s next great leap forward.”
A Chung-Ang University alumnus with a background in pro-democracy activism, Jeong has served as a Gimpo city councilor, an advisor on agricultural and marine policies for Gyeonggi Province, and as the deputy director of the Next-Generation Convergence Technology Research Institute.
