Pianist Park Se-young: Why His International Performances Are Redefining Modern Classical Music

Performs across solo, contemporary music, and opera
Pianist Se-Young Park has built an international career across Europe and the United States, appearing in solo recitals and in contemporary and operatic repertoire.
This month and next, Park is the performance pianist for the premiere production of the contemporary opera ‘Sally Ride,’ produced by Seattle’s Robro Opera Collective. A recent live recording of Schumann performed by Park was also broadcast on Missouri classical radio station 91.9 Classical KC.
Her overseas profile was forged through appearances at major international festivals, including the Amalfi Coast Music Festival in Italy, the Atlantic Music Festival in the United States, the Brancaleoni International Music Festival in Italy, and the Liszt Academy International Summer Music Festival in Hungary — gaining experience in the traditional centers of classical music.
On U.S. stages she was invited to the University of South Florida’s Steinway Series, where she performed Beethoven’s late sonatas and participated in a project based on The Art of the Fugue. Through the ‘Piano Fixed’ series she has championed works by Korean contemporary composer Lee Hye‑kyung, showing her strength in modern repertoire as well.
At home, Park completed the Seoul Arts Center Music Gifted Academy and graduated from Dongduk Women’s University. She earned her master’s degree at the University of South Florida on a full scholarship.
She went on to complete a doctorate at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, serving as a teaching assistant and receiving full funding. She later studied with distinguished mentors such as Boris Slutsky and Logan Skelton, further deepening her musical insight.
Park said, “Drawing on the experience I’ve gained on diverse stages, I want to pursue a wide range of musical activities — classical and contemporary repertoire, as well as collaborative projects. I will continue to work so that each performance offers a fresh interpretation and meaningful musical communication.”
