How Michael Jackson’s Movie ‘Michael’ Revived His Music: A Deep Dive into Chart Success

By Kim Seong-hoon, Herald Economy — Michael Jackson, the “King of Pop,” has surged back onto U.K. and U.S. music charts in the wake of the new biopic Michael.
On May 8 (local time), Jackson’s 2005 greatest-hits compilation The Essential rose to No. 1 on the U.K. Official Albums Chart.
It’s his first time topping that chart since 2014, when Xscape — an album of previously unreleased tracks — reached the summit, marking a 12-year gap.
Several other Jackson albums reappeared on the U.K. Official Charts: Thriller sits at No. 6, Bad at No. 8, Off the Wall at No. 47, and Dangerous at No. 80. The film tie-in Michael – Songs from the Motion Picture landed at No. 76.
On the singles chart, “Billie Jean” climbed to No. 4 and “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” reached No. 15. The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back,” from Jackson’s early years with the group, returned at No. 33.
Many of Jackson’s albums and tracks have also re-entered the top 100 of various U.S. Billboard charts.
Industry observers attribute the renewed interest to the box-office success of the biopic Michael. The film opened earlier in North America, topped the box office and generated significant attention; it is scheduled to open in South Korea on the 13th.
