[EPN Npinow Reporter Gonarri] Alex Ligertwood, the former lead singer of Santana, has died at the age of 79.
Ligertwood’s death was announced on the 3rd (local time) on social media by his wife, Shaun Brogan. The family said he \”fell asleep peacefully beside his beloved dog.\”
Brogan said many people cherished him and that he was widely loved. \”His extraordinary voice moved countless listeners,\” she added, \”and he lived with his whole heart and soul.\”
Known for a lifelong devotion to music, Ligertwood treasured songwriting, performance and sharing his gifts. Brogan, speaking with deep affection, asked people to keep the family in their prayers.
Born in Scotland, Ligertwood had struggled with health issues in recent years but was immersed in music from childhood. He picked up the guitar in the 1950s and went on to a long career with several bands, including Santana.
He was Santana’s lead vocalist from 1979 to 1994 and contributed to albums such as Marathon, Zebop! and Sacred Fire: Live in South America. His best-known songs include \”You Know That I Love You,\” \”Winning\” and \”Hold On.\”
He also worked with other acts over the years, including the Jeff Beck Group and the Average White Band.
The Magic of Santana wrote on social media that, during their time together, they learned the value of music, passion and friendship, adding, \”He was one of the greatest singers on Earth.\”
