A concert that showcases both the harp’s traditional tone and its expanded sonic palette will take place at the Tri-Bowl.
Operated by the Incheon Cultural Foundation, the Tri-Bowl will present harpist Shim So-jung’s Shim So-jung X Harp: UNLIMITED at 4 p.m. on the 16th of next month.
The performance opens this year’s Tri-Bowl series, Instruments of Reflection.
The program highlights both the classical harp and the electric harp on the same stage.
Beginning with a clear, delicate tone, Shim stretches the harp’s expressive range into jazz, bossa nova, crossover and electronic textures.
It’s an effort to reimagine an instrument often limited to a familiar image.
Shim studied at Seoul National University and the Eastman School of Music. She has performed at the Seoul Arts Center, Lotte Concert Hall and Bucheon Arts Center.
She founded the International Harp Association and balances performance, teaching and content programming. She also released the EP ‘Reborn Hearts’ and continues to compose and create new work.
The Tri-Bowl series is an annual curated program that stages cross-genre performances around a single theme.
This year’s series, titled Instruments of Reflection, Thoughtful Gestures, will present instrument-centered concerts from May through July.
From October through December, the series will shift to dance-centered performances.
The upcoming concert promises to reveal new possibilities for the harp beyond its familiar image.
