[Sports Seoul | Reporter Pyoh Gyeon-hyang] Company Spring, a performance planning agency, is launching a call for participants in its next-generation musical incubation project, “Beyond Daehakro.”

This initiative is part of the Korea Arts Council’s “Field Presentation Support Project for Aspiring Artists.” Seoul’s Daehakro Plus Theater and production company Show Note are joining forces as a consortium to provide professional production infrastructure.

The project’s cornerstone is a collaborative system uniting writers, composers, and directors in three-person teams. Aspiring artists will take on directorial roles from the early stages of creation, aiming to foster a unique vision and strong cohesion within creative teams. This approach seeks to lower entry barriers for aspiring directors and drive balanced growth in the musical creation ecosystem.

The project will allocate a total of 40.5 million KRW (30,375 USD) in creative support funds. It features two tracks: Track 1 for producing 50-minute showcases, and Track 2 for full performance development. Teams developing large-scale musicals will receive bonus points during selection, regardless of their track.

A roster of top-tier creators at the forefront of Korean original musicals will contribute to the project’s success.

Returning mentors include playwright and director Jang Woo-seong (“Mia Familia”), composers Min Hwal-ran (“Eli”) and Shin Gyeong-mi (“Trace U”), and writer/music director Jeong Joon (“A Christmas Carol”). Close mentoring will be provided by writer Han Jae-eun (“Fan Letter”) and composer Han Jeong-rim (“Hadestown,” “Rempika”).

To boost large-scale musical development, director Kim Tae-hyung (“Memphis,” “Marie Curie,” “Fan Letter”) and writer Han Ah-reum (“Hero,” “Little Women”) are joining the team. Rising director Lee O-jin and musical critic Choi Seung-yeon (board member of the Korean Musical Association’s Academic Division) will offer special lectures, rounding out a comprehensive educational experience.

Applications will be accepted until 3 PM on the 26th through the official Google Form submission page.

Eligibility requires forming a three-person team (writer, composer, director) with members under 29 (born after January 1, 1996). Second-round finalists will showcase at Plus Theater from September 4-6. Selected works will receive promotional opportunities, introductions to top domestic producers, and priority IP negotiation rights.

Company Spring CEO Song Gyeong-ok stated, “We’ve focused on addressing gaps in existing support systems, creating an environment where emerging creators can fully immerse themselves in their work. We hope this project serves as a launchpad for talented artists to showcase their unique artistic visions and push the boundaries of Korean musical theater.” gioia@sportsseoul.com
