Nationwide

On May 1, the first day of the long May holiday, authorities expect roughly 6.05 million vehicles to crowd highways nationwide — the heaviest traffic of the holiday period.

The Korea Expressway Corporation said traffic on May 1 is expected to reach about 6.05 million vehicles. Outbound congestion toward the provinces will begin around 6–7 a.m., peak between roughly 11 a.m. and noon, and is expected to ease by 9–10 p.m. Traffic into Seoul will start to build around 9–10 a.m., be worst near noon to 1 p.m., and should return to normal by about 10–11 p.m.

By route, as of 9:15 a.m., southbound on the Gyeongbu Expressway toward Busan, backups stretched 7 km (4.3 mi) from near Jukjeon to Suwon; 16 km (9.9 mi) from Giheung–Dongtan to near Namsa; 36 km (22.4 mi) from near Ipjang to near Oksan Junction; 16 km (9.9 mi) from Cheonan Junction to near Oksan Junction; 13 km (8.1 mi) from near Oksan Service Area to Cheongju Junction; and 4 km (2.5 mi) on the Daejeon–Biryong section. Northbound toward Seoul, congestion affected a 6 km (3.7 mi) stretch from Giheung to Singal Junction and a 7 km (4.3 mi) section from near Yangjae to Banpo.

On the Seoul–Yangyang Expressway toward Yangyang, traffic was slow for 19 km (11.8 mi) between Gangil and Seojong, 3 km (1.9 mi) from near Gapyeong Service Area to near Gangchon, and 10 km (6.2 mi) from near Namchuncheon to Chuncheon Junction.

On the Seohaean Expressway toward Mokpo, congestion continued for 3 km (1.9 mi) from Ansan Junction to near Sunsan Tunnel and for 42 km (26.1 mi) from Palgok Tunnel to the Seohae Bridge.

On the Yeongdong Expressway toward Gangneung, slowdowns were reported for 2 km (1.2 mi) from Seochang Junction to near Wolgot Junction; 8 km (5.0 mi) from near Banwol Tunnel to Bugok; 18 km (11.2 mi) from near Singal Junction to near Yangji Tunnel; 4 km (2.5 mi) near Hobeop Junction; 9 km (5.6 mi) from Icheon to Yeoju Junction; 3 km (1.9 mi) from Munmak to Munmak Service Area; and 10 km (6.2 mi) from near Manjong Junction to the Wonju area.

As of 11 a.m. at toll booths, estimated travel times between major cities for southbound traffic are: Seoul to Busan about 8 hours 10 minutes; Seoul to Gwangju about 7 hours 30 minutes; Seoul to Daejeon about 4 hours 10 minutes; and Seoul to Gangneung about 6 hours.
