GWM’s Haval brand has unveiled a new flagship SUV, the HX, signaling a push into the global off‑roader market.

Developed as a full‑size SUV to take on the Toyota Land Cruiser and Land Rover Defender, the HX represents a clear step up from Haval’s existing lineup.

The model is scheduled for an official reveal at the Beijing Auto Show, and a global launch is considered likely.

The HX adopts classic off‑roader design cues.

Square headlamps, a simple grille, thick pillars and angular wheel arches project a rugged stance, while the rear features a swing‑type tailgate and an externally mounted spare tire.

Notably, a LiDAR unit is mounted on the roof, indicating the integration of advanced autonomous driving systems.

Observers also note design influences from recent Chinese premium SUVs such as the Yangwang U8.

The HX is powered by a plug‑in hybrid (PHEV) system.

GWM pairs a 2.0‑liter turbocharged engine with two electric motors, and the vehicle will be offered with an all‑wheel‑drive (AWD) system and a four‑speed automatic transmission.

While official output figures have not been released, the recent high‑performance focus among Chinese brands suggests the HX will deliver meaningful performance.

The SUV is built on GWM’s latest One Architecture platform, which the company says improves driving stability and scalability.

The HX will offer Haval’s “Navigate on Autopilot” system, designed to operate in both urban traffic and on highways, along with automated parking functionality.

That feature set positions the HX as a technology‑focused SUV as much as an off‑roader.

Price details are still pending, but Haval expects to launch the model in the third quarter, with exports beyond China likely under consideration.

Industry observers say Chinese SUVs are moving past mere price competition and are now challenging established rivals on design and technology as well.
