Hyundai is sharpening its position in the crowded subcompact SUV segment with a focused trim strategy designed to broaden buyer choice and lower immediate purchase costs.

On April 7, Hyundai officially introduced the 2027 Kona, an updated model that overhauls the trim lineup to give customers clearer, more affordable options.

The refresh centers on price moves consumers can see and on strengthening value in the brand’s core trims.

‘Modern’ trim lowers the entry barrier…up to 590,000 KRW cut (≈ $443)

Hyundai has trimmed the price of the base ‘Modern’ trim to reduce upfront costs for subcompact SUV buyers.

Rather than a blunt sticker-price cut, Hyundai unbundled previously packaged convenience features, moving them into an optional Comfort Choice Package or into higher trims.

By making items such as synthetic-leather seats, LED interior lighting and second-row air vents optional, the gasoline 1.6 turbo Modern now lists at 24,290,000 KRW (down 490,000 KRW, ≈ $18,218), while the gasoline 2.0 Modern is priced at 23,600,000 KRW (≈ $17,700).

The popular 1.6 hybrid (HEV) model also saw its base price reduced by 590,000 KRW after the 12.3-inch navigation was moved to an option, allowing a post-incentive starting price of 28,960,000 KRW (≈ $21,720).

The strategy lets Hyundai serve two clear buyer groups: those who want just the essentials and those who prefer to add options for a more feature-rich package.

No need to pick and choose — the evolution of the H-Pick trim

On the other end of the spectrum, Hyundai substantially upgraded the H-Pick trim, which groups the options buyers choose most often.

H-Pick now comes standard with a 12.3-inch navigation screen, a dual full-auto climate system with a fine-dust sensor and after-blow function, a rain sensor and 18-inch alloy wheels, among other notable features.

With the gasoline 1.6 turbo H-Pick priced at 26,470,000 KRW (≈ $19,853), buyers get a well-rounded package without agonizing over options — a likely sweet spot for many customers.

Added personality with black wheels and targeted theme packs

Subtle exterior and infotainment updates round out the package.

The Black Exterior treatment adds visual weight to the body and now includes exclusive black wheels to create a more cohesive look.

Hyundai is also expanding its subscription-based FoD (Features on Demand) service to offer five playful display themes — including Pokémon Pikachu, the Korean children’s character Pororo, and Jjangmang Loopy — letting drivers personalize the cabin’s interface.

Built on a body that measures 4,350 mm in length and 1,825 mm in width, the 2027 Kona produces 149–198 horsepower depending on powertrain and posts combined fuel economy of 11.2–13.6 km/L (about 26.4–32.0 mpg US, gasoline), preserving its solid fundamentals.

Analysts say the Kona’s mid-cycle refresh could be an appealing, pragmatic option for buyers feeling the strain of rising vehicle prices.
