[Herald Economy = Reporter Seo Jae-geun] Hyundai Motor Group has emerged as a dark horse in the high-performance car segment—long dominated by premium marques—after its models repeatedly won the top prize in the World Car Awards’ World Performance Car category.
Industry sources said on the 5th that Hyundai Motor Group has taken the category three years running: the Kia EV6 GT in 2023, the Ioniq 5 N in 2024, and this year’s Ioniq 6 N.
Analysts say Hyundai’s electrification push is reshaping a market once led by premium names known for internal-combustion engineering and brand heritage, such as Porsche, Audi, McLaren and BMW.
A Hyundai Motor Group spokesperson said the company’s E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform) combines advanced electrification technology, motorsports expertise and vehicle data gathered from its rolling lab to drive performance to the limit—assets that have become key to its competitiveness in the high-performance arena.
The spokesperson added that Hyundai leveraged 11 years of WRC know-how and integrated the Ioniq 5 N’s PE system into the Rolling Lab RN24 to develop high-performance electrification technologies. Those developments were then adapted and optimized for production cars to satisfy customers both on track and in everyday driving.
The Ioniq 6 N, born from that work, uses front and rear motors that produce a combined peak output of 448 kW (609 PS / about 601 hp) and 740 Nm of torque (75.5 kgf·m / about 546 lb-ft). With the temporary N Green Boost engaged, combined peak output rises to 478 kW (650 PS / about 642 hp) and torque increases to 770 Nm (78.5 kgf·m / about 568 lb-ft).

Hyundai also equipped the Ioniq 6 N with next-generation suspension geometry, stroke-responsive electronically controlled suspension (ECS) dampers, front Hydro G bushings and rear dual-layer bushings to balance everyday ride comfort with the sharper handling expected from a high-performance car.
The car is packed with performance-focused electrified features—▷ N e-Shift and N Ambient Shift Lights ▷ N Active Sound Plus ▷ N Drift Optimizer ▷ N Track Manager ▷ N Race Cam—designed to deliver an engaging, thrilling driving experience.
That product focus showed up in the World Car Awards judges’ assessments.
Judge Zvonimir Jurcic praised the Ioniq 6 N: “In today’s fiercely competitive high-performance EV market, many models can go fast, but few combine driving fun, precision and genuine road feel. The Ioniq 6 N isn’t the most expensive or the top-spec car on paper, but it can behave like a true sports car on demanding roads.”
Last July, the Ioniq 6 N made a notable appearance on the hillclimb at the 2025 Goodwood Festival of Speed in the U.K., marking its first major step into the global high-performance market.
In January, the Ioniq 6 N was named “Best High-Performance Electric Car” at the U.K.’s What Car? 2026 What Car Awards, and this month Top Gear selected it as “Best Car for Drivers” at the 2026 Top Gear Electric Awards—further validation of its strong product credentials.
