This collaboration brings together Singer’s expertise in highly personalized air-cooled Porsche 911 restorations with Red Bull Advanced Technologies’ high-performance engineering prowess. The partnership aims to develop techniques that enhance the torsional rigidity of Type 964 Cabriolet and Targa models, which are revitalized through Singer’s Classic Turbo service.

Since its establishment in California in 2009, Singer has embodied a philosophy of relentless pursuit of excellence. The restoration process begins when owners of 964-generation Porsche 911 Cabriolets or Targas commission Singer for a bespoke restoration through their Classic Turbo service. These iconic sports cars, originally manufactured by Porsche over three decades ago, continue to captivate enthusiasts.

The initial phase of restoration involves a meticulous disassembly of the client’s vehicle. Technicians carefully remove the interior, exterior bodywork, and all mechanical components to reveal the steel monocoque chassis. This chassis then undergoes a thorough assessment, cleaning, and preparation process to ensure it’s in optimal condition for the subsequent restoration stages.

At the request of their clients, Singer engaged Red Bull Advanced Technologies to leverage their world-class capabilities in simulation and structural analysis. The team created a digital model of the Porsche 964 chassis using a combination of scan data and manual measurements. They then employed finite element analysis (FEA) software to calculate the torsional rigidity for various configurations, including both roofed and open-top versions. The FEA model was refined iteratively until the predicted rigidity values aligned with those recorded in physical tests.

Utilizing this model, Red Bull Advanced Technologies identified the areas of the open-roof structure that provided the strongest resistance to applied torsional forces, primarily by assessing strain energy distribution. These insights led to the design of 13 carbon fiber structures strategically placed to reinforce key components. This approach allowed for significant improvements while preserving the original 964 chassis and adhering to packaging constraints. The reinforcement structures were integrated into the correlated FEA model to ensure the desired torsional rigidity levels were achieved. As a final validation step, a prototype vehicle incorporating these reinforcements underwent rigorous testing.

The 13 carbon fiber reinforcement structures developed by Red Bull Advanced Technologies are bonded to the 964 monocoque during the restoration process. This results in an impressive 175% improvement in overall torsional rigidity. The enhanced chassis stiffness translates to superior handling, improved braking performance, and a more refined driving experience, elevating the open-roof models to a level of performance comparable to their coupe counterparts.

Singer’s Classic Turbo service allows owners to commission restorations inspired by the iconic original 911 Turbo, first introduced in 1974. Clients can choose from coupe, cabriolet, or Targa body styles for their bespoke restorations.
