| SEOUL — Michelin will supply original equipment (OE) tires for Hyundai Motor’s large hydrogen fuel cell truck, the New Xcient Fuel Cell, the company announced on Tuesday.
Beginning early this year, the New Xcient Fuel Cell trucks destined for the European market will be equipped with Michelin’s ‘X Line Energy’ tires. These tires are specifically engineered for long-haul transportation, optimizing efficiency for heavy-duty trucks. The tires feature a compound that reduces rolling resistance and a structure focused on durability, significantly improving fuel efficiency and longevity. This supply agreement is part of Michelin’s strategy to strengthen its position in the European commercial vehicle market for eco-friendly tires.
The New Xcient boasts a 180 kW hydrogen fuel cell system paired with a 350 kW output electric motor, enabling it to travel over 720 km (447 miles) on a single charge when fully loaded. Hyundai has also integrated PlusAI’s Level 4 autonomous driving software, Super Drive, into its hydrogen electric platform, enhancing both efficiency and safety for long-distance transportation.
Michelle Zhu, President of Michelin Korea, stated, “We are proud to be supplying Michelin tires for Hyundai’s cutting-edge hydrogen electric truck.” She added, “As the commercial vehicle market evolves technologically, we are committed to offering solutions that balance economic viability, environmental sustainability, and safety by continually improving our products’ performance and energy efficiency.”
