Hongseong County successfully hosted the first-ever KAIST Mobility Challenge Competition at the Naepo Knowledge Industry Center. The event drew over 200 participants, including representatives from 12 finalist teams and officials from Chungnam Province, Hongseong County, and KAIST.
The competition initially attracted 25 teams from universities nationwide. Following rigorous document and technical evaluations, 12 teams advanced to the finals. Over a two-month period, these finalists leveraged resources provided by the KAIST Mobility Research Institute, including a 1:15 scale miniature urban testing environment and an autonomous vehicle platform, to develop and test their algorithms.
During the finals, contestants implemented cutting-edge algorithms to address key challenges in autonomous driving technology. These included route generation and following, obstacle avoidance, and multi-vehicle cooperative driving. The teams’ solutions were put to the test in a competition arena that closely simulated real-world road conditions, allowing for a comprehensive evaluation of their technical proficiency and reliability.
The KAIST Mobility Research Institute, which opened its doors in November 2023, is at the forefront of mobility technology development and the transition to artificial intelligence (AX). This competition showcased the institute’s commitment to providing students with hands-on experience in developing and validating real-world technologies using their advanced research platforms.
Deputy Governor Park Seong-cheol emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This competition serves as a crucial launchpad for cultivating future mobility talent and fostering synergies between education, research, and industry.” He further pledged, “We are committed to ensuring that Naepo New Town evolves into a cornerstone for the future mobility hub, driving innovation and growth in this sector.”
