In the video, Harro took the high-performance electric Ioniq 6 N for a spin around Seoul, showcasing the engineering details he values and Hyundai’s technological direction.
Harro stated, “This is the most exciting time to be in automotive engineering. AI is revolutionizing our development processes, and the shift to electrification is accelerating rapidly.”
He added, “However, what I emphasize most is driving pleasure. The true test of a well-engineered car is how it feels behind the wheel at dawn.”
Harro identified “fundamentals” as the cornerstone of Hyundai Motor Group’s R&D. Since joining in 2024 and his promotion to president, he has been overseeing the driving dynamics of the global lineup.
His tenure has focused on enhancing core performance across product development. As R&D head, he’s also driving the transition to software-defined vehicles (SDVs) through interdepartmental collaboration.
“In vehicle dynamics, mastering the basics is crucial,” Harro explained. “Everyone, from seasoned engineers to ADAS specialists, must grasp our automotive philosophy.”
This philosophy guided the development of the Ioniq 5 N and Ioniq 6 N. “Our aim was to elevate performance and dynamics while maintaining everyday comfort,” Harro noted.
These models feature advanced tech like electronically controlled dampers with stroke sensing and improved chassis dynamics. “These incremental changes culminate in a new philosophy that boosts track performance,” he said.
Hyundai leverages both the Namyang Research Institute’s test track and Germany’s Nürburgring for high-performance vehicle development. Harro expressed gratitude for access to these world-class facilities.
“These testing grounds are vital for validating high-performance EVs like the 650-horsepower Ioniq 6 N,” he added.
Harro emphasized, “Steering feel is paramount to me. It’s the most direct link between driver and vehicle.”
He continued, “I’m fortunate to influence vehicle development from components to final decisions. My constant focus is on how to convey this feel to our customers.”
