FreeTech MI, a company that has been localizing marine and industrial steering and control systems for nearly four decades, has unveiled its Parallel Dual Propulsion Hybrid Lead System. This innovative system, which operates electric and internal combustion propulsion in parallel, marks the company’s strategic entry into the eco-friendly marine mobility market.

The system’s standout feature is its ability to control both electric and internal combustion outboards using a single electronic engine remote control lever (ERC). Industry experts are hailing it as a practical hybrid solution that successfully balances efficiency, stability, and cost-effectiveness.

A key advantage of the Parallel Dual Propulsion Hybrid Lead System is its single electronic control interface, which allows for simultaneous or selective operation of electric and internal combustion propulsion. This versatility enables the use of high-output internal combustion outboards for high-speed navigation, while electric propulsion can be employed for low-speed, precision maneuvers such as docking, anchoring, and fishing. The result is a significant boost in both fuel efficiency and operational convenience.

The system’s ability to run both propulsion types in parallel makes it particularly suitable for workboats and commercial vessels where power stability and operational reliability are paramount.

The marine industry has seen a rapid increase in demand for electrification, driven by tightening global environmental regulations. However, the high initial costs and maintenance burdens associated with high-output electric outboards and large-capacity, high-voltage batteries have been significant obstacles.

FreeTech MI’s innovative system addresses these challenges by incorporating 6 to 20 horsepower electric motors and a 48V battery. This configuration substantially reduces initial investment costs compared to high-voltage electric propulsion systems. The hybrid approach allows for reduced noise and emissions during electric operation, while retaining the benefits of internal combustion engines for long-distance and high-speed travel. This balanced solution is attracting attention for its ability to meet both environmental and economic needs.

The system is built on a 48V marine electrical platform, designed to expand onboard power usage capabilities.

During high-speed operation using the internal combustion engine, the system automatically charges the electric outboard’s battery. For vessels equipped with a compact 48V battery (around 10kWh), charging can be completed within an hour using an electric vehicle’s V2L function. Safety is enhanced through the use of thermally managed lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which reduce fire risks in marine environments.

Developed entirely with domestic technology, the Parallel Dual Propulsion Hybrid Lead System comes standard with a CAN communication port for steering and propulsion control.

This feature facilitates future integration with autonomous vessels, remote control systems, and AI-based ship modules. It also provides a significant advantage in the domestic autonomous vessel industry, avoiding potential patent restrictions or royalty issues associated with foreign products.

Kim Young-ki, CEO of FreeTech MI, emphasized, “Our Parallel Dual Propulsion Hybrid Lead System is a practical technology that addresses both eco-friendly policies and real-world operational needs. It offers a competitive solution for markets grappling with cost and stability concerns during the transition to electrification.”

Kim added, “This year, we’re launching the electric outboard engine and the complete Parallel Hybrid Lead System. We plan to conduct demonstration operations and expand into international markets. Our goal is to provide realistic eco-friendly transition solutions across the marine sector, from leisure boats to commercial vessels like fishing boats and workboats.”

Founded in 1987, FreeTech MI has established itself as a leading domestic marine parts manufacturer. The company has developed and produced mechanical and hydraulic steering devices, control cables, and electronic control systems using proprietary technology. Today, FreeTech products are installed on over 3,000 small and medium-sized boats worldwide each month and are supplied to more than 60 countries across Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
