BYD Song Pro DM-i: The Game-Changing SUV with 1,500km Range at Just 2,000,000 Won!

Daniel Kim Views

The prices of the Sportage and Tucson, iconic domestic compact SUVs, have now surpassed 40 million KRW (about 30,000 USD) for fully loaded models, leading some to say, “It’s becoming daunting to even consider buying an SUV these days.”

Amid this pricing climate, a new vehicle boasting an unprecedented driving range and a game-changing price point has emerged, sending ripples through the U.S. automotive market.

The vehicle in question is the ‘Song Pro DM-i,’ a midsize SUV unveiled by BYD, the global leader in electric vehicle sales.

This model has set the automotive community abuzz, primarily due to its seemingly unrealistic fuel efficiency.

Equipped with BYD’s fifth-generation DM-i hybrid technology, this SUV can travel an astounding 1,500 km on a single tank of gas and full battery charge.

To put this into perspective, it’s equivalent to driving from Seoul to Busan twice (about 1,600 km) on a single fill-up – a feat that essentially eliminates the need for monthly gas station visits for many drivers.

The fuel efficiency is equally impressive, boasting 25-30 km/L, outperforming even the most economical domestic models.

However, what’s truly turning heads is the price tag. The Song Pro DM-i’s starting price in its home market is set at around 100,000 CNY (about 14,411 USD), which translates to roughly 20 million KRW (about 15,000 USD) in the Korean market.

At this price point, consumers could potentially buy two Song Pros for the cost of one domestic SUV priced at nearly 40 million KRW (about 30,000 USD).

Challenging the perception that Chinese vehicles are merely budget options, the Song Pro features a large rotating touchscreen and a Tesla-rivaling infotainment system, elevating its overall appeal.

On the safety front, BYD has incorporated its proprietary ‘Blade Battery’ technology to minimize fire risks and equipped the vehicle with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) as standard.

With its quality already proven in global markets, the Song Pro is emerging not just as an affordable alternative but as a formidable competitor that could challenge domestic brands on technological grounds.

The news has sparked intense interest among Korean consumers. Comments flooding online forums include, “The Sportage’s price has skyrocketed; this value proposition is too good to ignore,” “A 1,500 km range is truly groundbreaking,” and “Domestic brands need to take note and reassess their pricing strategy.”

With its jaw-dropping 1,500 km range and disruptive 20 million KRW (about 15,000 USD) price point, the Song Pro DM-i is more than just another new vehicle launch. It’s sending a powerful message to inflation-weary consumers about the true meaning of value for money in today’s automotive landscape.
