[Herald Economy = Reporter Seo Ji-yeon] CMA CGM, the world’s third-largest shipping company, said on June 6 (local time) that one of its vessels was attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz the previous afternoon.
CMA CGM said the vessel San Antonio was struck, injuring crew members and causing damage to the ship, Reuters reported.
The company said injured crew were evacuated and are receiving medical treatment. The attacker has not been officially identified, but local reports indicate the ship may have been hit by a missile fired from the Iranian coast.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy warned a day earlier on X (formerly Twitter) that any vessel transiting the Strait of Hormuz must use routes designated by Iran, and that violators would face military action.
The IRGC command accused U.S. forces of taking “dangerous actions” that undermine maritime order and security, saying those actions had threatened navigation safety in the Strait and damaged several merchant ships, tankers and fishing vessels in the area.
French daily Le Parisien, citing sources, reported the ship had been sailing under U.S. Navy escort alongside another merchant vessel as part of former President Donald Trump’s “Project Freedom.”
Le Parisien added that the projectile that struck the ship was fired from the Iranian coast and ignited a fire in the engine room.
Le Monde reported that French government spokesman Mod Brezon told a post-cabinet briefing the shelling of the CMA CGM vessel “clearly shows the situation in the Strait of Hormuz remains dangerous.”
Brezon said the ship was not flying a French flag; it was registered in Malta and crewed by Filipino sailors.
He expressed solidarity with the injured crew and said President Emmanuel Macron stressed that “France was not the target.”
Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot told Radio France Info that 59 French-affiliated vessels remain immobilized near the Strait of Hormuz and that 26 French seafarers in the area are living in poor conditions.
