Carpet Cleaning

Cleaning a large carpet can feel like a hassle. Luckily, there’s an easy at-home trick that doesn’t require hauling it off to be laundered. Sprinkle baking soda over the surface, give it time to do its work, and you’ll have a carpet that looks — and smells — much fresher.
1. Prepare the carpet

Start by making sure the carpet is completely dry. Don’t apply baking soda to a damp surface — it can clump and make cleanup harder.
2. Sprinkle baking soda

Evenly coat the carpet with baking soda. Put on gloves and work the powder into the fibers so it penetrates the pile. Let it sit for about half a day — or longer if you can. The longer it sits, the better it will neutralize odors.
Baking soda works by absorbing smells. As it sits, it pulls trapped odors out of the carpet, leaving the room fresher.
3. Vacuum the carpet

Now vacuum up all the baking soda. Move the vacuum slowly to ensure you pull up the powder, and make several passes until the carpet looks clean. Take your time — slow strokes pick up more debris than rushing.

When you check the vacuum canister, you’ll probably see a mix of powder, dust, and hair.

Do this every few months and your carpet will stay soft, fresh, and odor-free.
