How to Easily Sharpen a Dull Knife

Nothing kills kitchen momentum like a dull knife. Pros keep theirs razor-sharp with whetstones and specialty tools, but most households don’t have those gadgets on hand. If you’re stuck hacking instead of slicing, try this clever, no-equipment trick to bring a blunt blade back to life.

Grab a ceramic mug and use the unglazed ring on the bottom as a makeshift sharpener. Hold the blade and, from heel to tip, draw it along the unglazed spot. Repeat on both sides, always stroking in the same direction.

You may notice tiny metal filings come off as you sharpen — that’s normal.

A plate’s unglazed back works just as well if you don’t have a mug.

Again, drag the blade from base to tip along the rim in a smooth motion.

Rinse the knife thoroughly under running water to remove any residue. Dry it and test — the edge should feel noticeably sharper, making prep faster and way more enjoyable.
