World’s Longest Sandwich Challenge Held in Argentina[Online capture. Yonhap News][Online capture. Yonhap News]
A giant sandwich event in Avellaneda, in southern Buenos Aires Province, ended in chaos after hundreds of people pushed past barricades. Parrilla El Tano staged the event on the 25th (local time) to mark Argentina’s Revolution Day and the restaurant’s 25th anniversary, aiming to build the world’s longest beef sandwich. The goal was roughly 750 m (about 2,461 ft). Temporary tables lined seven city blocks, and notaries were scheduled to verify the record. The event used about 1,500 kg (roughly 3,307 lb) of beef, 1,050 special loaves of bread each 75 cm (about 29.5 in) long, and 7,500 eggs. Organizers planned to feed more than 7,000 people. But after the 11:00 a.m. start, cooking and distribution ran behind schedule and the crowd of thousands grew restless. Some attendees accused officials and VIPs of delaying service by arriving late. Things quickly spiraled out of control. Online videos show people knocking down long fence lines and rushing the tables to grab sandwiches. Orderly distribution effectively stopped as frustrated attendees swept up food, turning the serving area into a chaotic feeding frenzy. Many who had waited hours left empty-handed. On social media, the restaurant thanked participants and said most of the day felt festive, full of families and friends, but admitted it was bitterly disappointed that “everything collapsed at the end.” Some witnesses say people even took event equipment and supplies. Organizers, who say they spent months preparing the project, called the behavior an insult to staff and to those who waited patiently. Local media reported the sandwich reached 771 m (about 2,530 ft), and that official certification stopped at 700 m (about 2,297 ft) after people began eating the sandwich. #WorldsLongest #Sandwich #Argentina Yonhap News TV — Story tips and inquiries: KakaoTalk/LINE jebo23, Seongseop Lee (leess@yna.co.kr)
