[SPOTV News reporter Bae Seon-young] YouTuber Kim Seon-tae opened up about why he donates.
On the 21st, Kim released a collaboration video with a mattress brand. In the clip, he lounges on a bed to demo the product, then explains his plans to give back.
Kim said, \”I’ll be donating beds and mattresses to elderly people in need. The brand is covering most of the cost—my portion is pretty small.\”
He added that a bigger motivation is making money. \”I need to earn money for myself. Earning lets me donate, but I don’t make money just to give it away. Ultimately, I’m doing this so I can live well.\”
Kim also said he plans to make donations separate from the company, but will keep the amount private amid all the chatter. \”I don’t want to spark controversy while doing something good,\” he said. \”People say I’m trying to craft a ‘donation angel’ image, but that’s absolutely not true. I’ve said it before: I do it for myself—to boost my image,\” he admitted candidly.
He brushed off claims that his giving is tax-motivated. \”What nonsense. That’s like saying, ‘It’s 30% off, so let’s buy a bunch of stuff we don’t need.’ That’s a baseless accusation,\” he said.
With a laugh, Kim confessed, \”I’m not some saint. I’m obsessed with money—I’m the type who wanted to earn the money I couldn’t touch as a civil servant. That’s exactly me.\”
Kim, who ran Chungju City’s YouTube channel and helped redefine local government promotion, left public office last February and went freelance. Since then, he’s continued to collaborate with several major companies.
