How a Heartfelt Letter Changed the Fate of an Adopted Dog: The Story of Bandit

Daniel Kim Views

A New York family who adopted a rescue dog named Bandit made headlines after receiving a heartfelt letter and detailed notes from his previous owner. Six years later, the two families remain close, and many now see rehoming as, at times, the kindest choice for an animal.

On the 20th, Newsweek reported that people who adopt rescue dogs usually know very little about an animal’s past and must rely on the limited information they’re given.

But Lauren Hichak Mullins’ story was different. She adopted Bandit, a Labrador Retriever–Pit Bull mix, from a New York shelter. After the adoption was finalized, the shelter handed her a letter from Bandit’s previous owner that was full of emotion.

When Mullins first saw Bandit in February 2020, he was two years old, and she immediately felt certain she wanted to give him a forever home.

On the day the adoption became official, the shelter gave her Bandit’s belongings and first-aid supplies, plus a thick envelope. Inside was a carefully typed letter from his former owner, photos of Bandit as a puppy, a list of his favorite treats, and the commands he already knew.

The letter explained the “hardest decision” the owner had to make.

The previous owner admitted that Bandit grew extremely anxious around the family’s crawling baby and decided to rehome him because they feared it could be dangerous for both the child and Bandit.

Mullins said she could feel the despair and sadness in every word. “It broke my heart,” she said, adding that the letter made it clear how much love and care Bandit had received before he came to them.

Adopting an adult dog often means facing the unknown about the animal’s past, but the previous owner’s thoughtful notes helped Mullins understand Bandit’s quirks quickly.

She shared the story on Bandit’s TikTok account, and the video quickly racked up more than 1.1 million views.

Commenters praised the idea that rehoming isn’t always irresponsible and agreed that, in some cases, it can be the best choice for the animal.

Six years after the adoption, Mullins and Bandit’s former owner still keep in touch. They go on walks together and regularly share photos of Bandit as he grows.

Bandit can be a mischievous handful — so much so that he sometimes earns the nickname “Bruce” — but Mullins continues working with a professional trainer to help him build social skills.

In February 2026, they welcomed a second puppy, named Buddha, expanding Bandit’s family.

Because Bandit is sensitive, the dogs are currently kept on separate floors during the adjustment period. They’re working on training with the goal of helping the pair live together peacefully.

One commenter wrote, “Bandit, loved so deeply by two families, is a very lucky dog,” and celebrated his fresh start.
