NASA’s live feed from the crewed lunar spacecraft Artemis II briefly turned into a viral moment when a jar of Nutella drifted across the screen.
On April 7 (Korean time), NASA announced that Artemis II had reached approximately 406,771 km (252,756 miles) from Earth at about 8:02 a.m., surpassing the Apollo 13 milestone.
The stream captured the jar of Nutella bobbing in microgravity roughly 3 minutes and 50 seconds before besting Apollo 13’s record, and social media promptly crowned it “the best Nutella ad ever.”
Nutella even joined the fun, posting on social media, “Honored to fly farther than any spread in history.”
NASA’s YouTube segment also gave viewers a peek at the crew’s in-flight menu. Astronaut Christina Koch named “shrimp cocktail” as her most-anticipated item — freeze-dried shrimp in pouches that are rehydrated with water.
“Most of our food comes dehydrated,” she said, calling shrimp cocktail “the tastiest treat in space.” She added that while the crew secures food so it doesn’t float away, “sometimes it’s fun to let a bite float and catch it with your mouth.”
NASA says the Orion aboard Artemis II carries 189 menu options, from beef brisket barbecue to mac and cheese and chocolate cookies.
They left bread off the menu because crumbs can damage equipment; instead, they packed tortillas, which astronauts use to wrap many dishes.
Commander Reid Wiseman explained how taste changes in space: fluids shift toward the head in microgravity, which can make the nose feel congested and dull the palate. To counter that, NASA included five types of hot sauce to add some kick.
He showed a perfect spherical droplet of liquid floating by and remarked, “That tiny bead of water really makes you feel like we’re away from Earth.”
Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen revealed special treats stashed in his bag — snacks flavored with Canada’s signature maple syrup. “Tasting something familiar from home during a long mission does a lot for your morale,” he said.
