The National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives is taking steps to keep seafood prices in check as the Lunar New Year approaches.
They’re offering government-reserved seafood at up to half off market prices, while online shoppers can snag holiday favorites with discounts as steep as 60%.
President Labor Jin made a trip to the bustling Noryangjin Fish Market on the 10th to check on the distribution of government-reserved seafood and chat with local vendors. He got hands-on, purchasing holiday seafood himself and surprising 500 market merchants with goodie bags filled with encouraging notes, rice cakes, and hand cream.
The Federation plans to distribute over 13,000 tons of government-reserved seafood, including crowd-pleasers like mackerel and yellow croaker, to markets and stores across the country by the 15th. That’s 2,000 tons more than last year’s holiday season, with prices slashed by up to 50% compared to regular retail.
Jin also stopped by the Onnuri gift certificate refund booth to ensure smooth operations and rally public support for seafood consumption. The Noryangjin Fish Market is running a special promotion until the 14th, offering same-day shoppers up to 30% back in Onnuri gift certificates (capped at 20,000 KRW (about 15 USD) per person).
Meanwhile, seafood lovers can catch some online deals with the Federation’s ‘Lunar New Year Special’ running on their shopping site until the 22nd. Shoppers can use a weekly 20% off coupon (up to 20,000 KRW (about 15 USD) savings) on a variety of domestic seafood, from abalone to yellow corvina.
When you factor in the Federation’s own discounts, some deals are too good to pass up. The ‘Wando Live Abalone Gift Set’ (12-14 pieces, 2 kg) is going for up to 60% off. Other crowd-pleasers like ‘Jeju Premium Extra Large Rockfish’ (3-pack), ‘Jeju Premium Hairtail Set,’ and ‘Seoraksan Japonica Freshwater Eel Gift Set’ (2 kg) are seeing discounts in the 40% range.
But wait, there’s more! With a boost from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, they’re also hosting a ‘Lunar New Year Essentials Gift Set’ promotion. Expect to see popular gift items like dried yellow corvina, hairtail, pre-cooked abalone, mackerel, anchovies, and seaweed sets at up to half off market prices.
