[Alpha Economy = Reporter Cha Hye-young] Consumer trust is fraying after revelations that several of Korea’s major fashion companies sold puffer jackets filled with a different down than what was advertised.
On the 24th, industry sources said Shinsegae-affiliated labels Bobeu and Jikeot halted sales and issued recalls for 13 goose-down jackets after discovering they had been filled with duck down instead of goose down.
The affected items are from the 2024 winter season: nine pieces from Bobeu and four from Jikeot.
During a recent in-house quality check of all down products supplied by partners, Shinsegae found that supplier A had submitted falsified test reports and used filling sourced from an unverified vendor.
Shinsegae Tomboy posted an apology from its CEO on its website and is offering voluntary refunds for the affected product line. The company has cut ties with the supplier and is preparing legal action.
William Kim, CEO of Shinsegae Tomboy, apologized and pledged to tighten step-by-step quality checks across production and to completely overhaul the supplier management system.
Earlier, E-Land affiliate Who.A.U also suspended sales after tests showed its goose-down jackets contained only 30% goose down, far below the labeled 80%.
A customer spotted the discrepancy after checking the actual inner label beneath the product information sticker.
On fashion platform Musinsa, the brand Intempomood decided to issue full refunds over incorrect down fill ratios in its puffer jackets, and Lafudge Store was removed from the platform after falsifying filling ratios.
As a consequence, consumers are starting to dismantle jackets to inspect the fill themselves or are requesting tests from independent inspection agencies.
