Veteran actor Shin Goo, now 90, continues to mesmerize theatergoers as The French Vault: Who Shall Climb the North Wall? approaches the close of an acclaimed run.
The production is scheduled to end on June 7. A dark comedy, The French Vault follows five people who converge outside a secret underground bank vault over the course of a single night. Forced into cooperation despite deep mutual suspicion, the characters find themselves in situations that produce sharp tension and uproarious laughter. Critics and audiences alike have praised the show, and director Jang Jin has said he wrote the play after being inspired by Shin Goo.

Performances featuring Shin Goo sold out quickly, reaching 100 percent seat occupancy shortly after opening. Demand remained intense; tickets were difficult to secure even a month in advance. Co-lead Sung Ji Ru received wide acclaim for fully inhabiting his role, helping the production maintain an average occupancy rate of 91 percent.
Producers extended the run by one week in response to overwhelming demand; the production had originally been scheduled to close on May 31.

A strong ensemble and consistently assured performances have been central to the play’s success. Despite his age, Shin Goo brings a commanding presence to the stage, lending the production depth, authority and emotional resonance.
The cast also includes Sung Ji Ru, Jang Hyun Sung, Jung Young Joo, Jang Young Nam, Choi Young Joon, Jo Dal Hwan, Ahn Doo Ho, Kim Han Kyul, Joo Jong Hyuk, Kim Seul Gi, and Geum Sae Rok. Their chemistry and comic timing have been widely credited with enhancing the show’s appeal.
The French Vault continues its run in Daehangno, Seoul’s theater district, through June 7.
