[mdtoday = Reporter Yang Jeong-eui] BTS further cemented its global influence by taking home Artist of the Year at the American Music Awards (AMA), one of the three major U.S. pop-music ceremonies.
On May 25 at 8 p.m. local time at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas at the 2026 American Music Awards, BTS beat out heavyweights including Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga and Bad Bunny to claim the night’s top honor.
It was the group’s first win in the category since 2021 — their first in five years, when “Butter” earned them the title. The victory drew extra attention because it came soon after the members completed their mandatory military service and returned to performing together as a full group.
BTS also won Song of the Summer for their new single “SWIM,” finishing the night with two awards.
After the announcement, leader RM said, “After completing our military service, receiving such a major award again feels especially meaningful. We’re so grateful that this win came from fans’ votes.” J-Hope thanked the global ARMY for standing with them for 13 years, and Jimin added, “We sincerely thank the fans who always support and love us.”
The American Music Awards, along with the Grammy Awards and the Billboard Music Awards, are considered among the three major U.S. popular-music ceremonies. Nominees are evaluated on streaming, album and song sales, radio airplay and touring revenue, and winners are chosen 100% by public vote.
