JTBC and KBS to jointly broadcast CONCACAF World Cup; talks with MBC and SBS collapse

JTBC and KBS will jointly broadcast the 2026 CONCACAF World Cup.

On the 22nd, JTBC — a general programming cable channel — said it had been negotiating resale rights with the three terrestrial broadcasters (KBS, MBC and SBS). JTBC offered the same terms to all three and confirmed on the 21st that it had reached an agreement with KBS to co-broadcast.

JTBC acknowledged responsibility for the prolonged negotiations, saying the drawn-out process — coming after coverage talks for the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics — had caused public concern. The network pledged to prepare thoroughly and deliver robust coverage.

JTBC previously secured the 2026 CONCACAF World Cup rights for about $125 million (roughly 190 billion KRW). It proposed that Central Group and the three terrestrial broadcasters split the remaining costs evenly after excluding digital resale revenue. Negotiations proved difficult, and JTBC said on the 20th that it had agreed to co-broadcast with KBS. JTBC’s final offer asked each broadcaster to purchase the rights for 14 billion KRW (about $10.5 million), but talks with MBC and SBS collapsed.

Blackpink’s Jisoo quietly departs after distancing herself from brother-related controversy

Blackpink member Jisoo quietly left the country after issuing a statement about a recent family-related controversy.

Jisoo departed for Paris via Incheon International Airport on the 22nd to fulfill overseas commitments.

She had planned an airport-fashion appearance in collaboration with a fashion marketing company but canceled the promotional event the day before departure, on the 21st. Her public relations team said the press schedule was called off due to unavoidable internal circumstances.

Wearing a striped T-shirt and jeans instead of sponsored items, Jisoo arrived at the airport in casual attire. She covered her face with a hat and mask, waved briefly to fans gathered there and exchanged a short greeting.

The controversy began after reports that an older brother of a well-known girl-group member, identified as Mr. A, had been arrested on charges of molesting a female internet streamer. Rumors circulated that the suspect was Jisoo’s brother. Jisoo’s legal representative denied the claim, saying the matter has nothing to do with the artist or BLISU, and that her older brother has no legal or business ties to BLISU and provides no financial or legal support.

Webtoon artist and broadcaster Kian84 visited elderly people who collect recyclable paper and donated 100 million KRW (about $75,000).

On the 21st, the YouTube channel CelebIn posted a video titled “Kian84 donated 100 million KRW to elderly recyclers.” In the clip, Kian84 appears as the first guest on Donation Planner and visits the homes of several elderly recyclers.

YouTuber Joo Geung-jeong introduced Kian84, saying they plan and carry out donations together every year. He added that they designed and executed the donations while constantly asking how they could help more, and that sharing the process might encourage viewers to get involved.

Kian84, who has regularly donated proceeds from his first exhibition and other activities, selected 100 elderly recyclers for this project and decided to give each person 1 million KRW (about $750). He said the idea grew from being raised by his grandmother and feeling sympathy for older women and men who collect recyclables.

Kian84 and Joo Geung-jeong met the recyclers in person and handed each recipient 1 million KRW. The beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude, moving the donors. After completing the donations, Kian84 said he felt proud and hoped future donors would feel the same pride and fulfillment from doing good work.
