[Sports Today reporter Jeong Ye-won] Singer-songwriter Yun Su-il opened up about a range of topics on ‘Kim Joo-ha’s Day & Night.’

Yun appeared on the MBN talk show ‘Kim Joo-ha’s Day & Night’ (hereafter ‘Day & Night’), which aired on the 25th.

On the show, Yun discussed his signature song \”Apartment,\” saying that using the notation \”APT\” was his idea. He noted that such an abbreviation isn’t common overseas and added that he likes the phrase \”simple is best.\”

He recalled that, at the time, apartment complexes weren’t as tightly packed as they are now; they were scattered and felt somewhat lonely. The Han River flowing nearby blended into the scene and gave him a distinctive inspiration — the setting, he said, was Jamsil.

He also remembered an incident during a past broadcast when the cameras began capturing shots unrelated to the stage. He suggested, \”It would be nice if you filmed it like this,\” but the station’s strict atmosphere back then even led to the performance being halted, he said.

Yun said he used to carry CDs around, asking people to \”just listen once,\” and that the song \”Apartment\” eventually became a nationwide hit. He added that videos recently pairing Rosé’s \”APT.\” with his own song have gone viral; he was surprised by how well the tracks fit together. \”I’ve even been jokingly called the ‘president of the reconstruction association,’\” he laughed.

He also spoke tenderly about his mother. \”My mother came from North Korea. She wanted to raise me well, but the atmosphere was highly exclusionary. If she moved into a neighborhood with me in her arms, people there wouldn’t accept us. To put it harshly, relatives would tell her not to come to their houses. Because my father was American, I was called ‘the Yankee’s son,’\” he said.

\”I used to fall asleep listening to songs in my mother’s arms,\” he recalled. \”Maybe she played a lot of music because she worried I’d go astray. That’s when I discovered the Beatles and singer Bae Ho. I fell in love with that music, and my life began to head toward becoming a singer.\”

He said his mother fiercely opposed his debut. \”In the entertainment industry, individuality matters. I didn’t see myself becoming a civil servant or getting into a big company through interviews or exams. I persuaded my mother to let me try singing,\” he said.

Yun also revealed that he doesn’t even know what his father looked like, which deepened his bond with his mother. She couldn’t register him on the family registry at the time and remarried. \”I didn’t even have a name until I started elementary school; my stepfather gave me my name,\” he confessed.

He touched on the hardships of his childhood. \”We didn’t even have electricity at home. Still, I worked hard and graduated from the best school in that neighborhood,\” he said with pride.

On individuality, he emphasized its importance in a competitive age. \”I like anything unique,\” he said. When his daughter was born, he thought she was so beautiful he named her \”Yun Beauty.\” People criticized the name and asked why he chose it, but he replied, \”What can I do if she’s beautiful?\” For his son, he chose the name \”Yun Ji-ho,\” saying he wants him to live like a tiger.
