Global supergroup ‘BTS’ is set to meet Mexico’s president ahead of their concerts in Mexico City.
On the morning of May 6 (local time), President Claudia Sheinbaum said at her regular Mañanera press conference that BTS will visit the presidential office and that she will open the presidential balcony so the band can greet citizens. She praised their music, saying it consistently delivers messages of friendship, peace and love.
In January, Sheinbaum welcomed the confirmation that BTS would perform in Mexico City, calling it a ‘historic moment.’ She noted that young people in the city had long anticipated the shows, underscoring the group’s strong local appeal.
BTS’s visit to Mexico is also expected to bring a sizable economic boost. The Mexico City Chamber of Commerce estimates the concerts will generate roughly 107.5 million USD (about 155.7 billion KRW).
Data back up the intense interest in BTS.
Spotify data released last year show Mexico ranks fifth worldwide for K-pop listening. Among local listeners, BTS was the most-streamed K-pop artist. Their 2020 album MAP OF THE SOUL : 7 was the most-streamed K-pop album in Mexico, and eight of the top 10 albums on that list were BTS releases. ‘Dynamite’ was the most-streamed song in Mexico since the K-pop boom, and seven of the top 10 songs on that chart were BTS tracks.
El Universal reports that Mexico City streams more BTS music on Spotify than any other city.
BigHit Music said, \”This underscores their unparalleled influence on the local pop music market.\”
BTS will perform three shows at Estadio GNP Seguros in Mexico City on May 7 and May 9–10. All three concerts sold out quickly after tickets went on sale, a testament to their ticket power.
