[Sports Seoul | Reporter Choi Seung-seop] IU — the lead of 21st Century Great Lady — publicly praised musical actors Kim So-hyun and Son Jun-ho after their moving stage performance tied to the drama.
On May 3, IU posted a screenshot from KBS1’s Open Concert to her social media with the caption, “Wow, Queen Uihyeon and King Heejong.”
The photo shows the real-life couple, Kim So-hyun and Son Jun-ho, delivering a powerful, stirring performance onstage.
Son Jun-ho reshared the post on his own social channels and quipped, “So my son’s girlfriend saw this.” He then added, with a laugh, “Heh… my son’s girlfriend… m… daughter-in-law…? What should I call her when we meet?” — a remark that amused netizens.
In 21st Century Great Lady, Kim So-hyun appears as Queen Uihyeon in a flashback involving Prince Ian (played by Byeon Woo-seok).
Earlier, Son Jun-ho portrayed King Heejong and left a strong impression. The fact that the two are a married couple in real life — and played a married pair on screen — added emotional resonance to the production.
On the 1,572nd episode of Open Concert that aired that day, the pair opened the show with a rendition of “The Phantom of the Opera,” the musical’s signature number. Performing at KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul, they displayed commanding vocal prowess.
The drama 21st Century Great Lady, which features their cameos, is set in a constitutional-monarchy version of Korea and follows a status-defying romance between Seong Hee-joo (IU) — a chaebol who descends from common roots — and Prince Ian (Byeon Woo-seok). thunder@sportsseoul.com
