Magician Lee Hoon took the stage on the 17th for the Nowon Cultural Center Gugak Arts Ensemble’s regular performance, “The Tale of Yi Chun-pung.”
On the 18th, World Art Factory said the production was a traditional play that combined gugak (Korean traditional music), yeonhui (traditional performance arts), and dance. The cast included theater actors, and samul nori master Kim Deok-su served as artistic director.
Lee Hoon delivered comic acting alongside traditional jaedam storytelling and magic. In this staging of the classic tale The Tale of Yi Chun-pung, his performance broadened the production’s popular appeal.
He has continued to modernize the allure of traditional magic by reinterpreting a historical figure from the Joseon-era Namsadang troupe onstage.
Lee Hoon is a designated inheritor of National Intangible Cultural Property No. 3, Namsadang Nori. He has won top prizes at the 5th National Jeonju Magic Competition and the 12th National Student Magic Competition, and he received the Special Award at the 1st Seongnam Magic Competition.
He also serves as a publicity ambassador for the Cultural Heritage Trust of the Gyeryong World Military Culture Expo. His acting and magic have appeared in productions such as the circus madang-geuk “Rabbit Ballad,” the fantasy folktale “Goblin Magic Academy,” and “Jeongeup Gwonbeon, in Classical Form” at Yeonji Art Hall.
Lee Hoon said, “I want to remain a traditional magician who can play even a small part in carrying on our traditions.”
