[Sports Today Reporter Song O-jung] Actor Son Chang-min recounted a striking anecdote that underlined just how popular he was at the height of his career.
Son appeared on MBN’s Kim Joo-ha’s Day & Night, which aired on April 4.
A child actor since age 7, Son is now in his 55th year as a performer. He said that at his peak his looks prompted comparisons to international stars like Sylvester Stallone and Jackie Chan. He even recalled an elderly woman — who didn’t follow actors closely — insisting he was skilled at kung fu and could pull off impressive spinning moves.

He went on to share a more startling memory about the intensity of his fame. \”Once I became popular, schoolgirls — back when I was hosting ‘March of Youth’ — would scream the moment I showed up in Sangsu. They would shout and sometimes even go too far,\” he said.
The room reacted with disbelief, but Son, with a deadpan expression, added that some of the students even asked for money to cover cleaning costs. \”That’s how extreme it was,\” he said.
In that pre-digital era, fan mail was the primary channel of communication. Son said he typically received 500–800 letters a day, and that number swelled to 2,000–3,000 during school breaks. He even had a dedicated P.O. box. He recalled being unable to accept a gift of 3,000 paper cranes — one fan had folded them all, a gesture that left him astonished.
