Somi Reveals Her Love for EXO’s Kai: A Fan’s Journey from ‘Produce 101’ to Heartfelt Confessions

[Sports Today reporter Kim Tae-hyung] Singer Jeon Somi admitted she’s a fan of EXO’s Kai.

Jeon Somi appeared on SBS’s No, But Seriously!, which aired on March 30.

On the show, she revealed she holds three passports — South Korea, Canada and the Netherlands. “My father is part Canadian and part Dutch, so I was able to inherit those nationalities,” she said, explaining that her father handled the necessary paperwork. She added that she uses her Korean passport most often, her Dutch passport when traveling to Europe, and her Canadian passport for trips to the U.S.

Jeon Somi recalled appearing with her father on the 2013 Children’s Day special of Start! Dream Team when she was in sixth grade. “My elementary school was known for its taekwondo demonstration team, and I was part of it, so I went on the show,” she said. She surprised the audience by noting, “I hold a fourth-degree black belt and I’m certified as a taekwondo instructor.”

The singer also confessed her long-standing admiration for Kai. “When I was on Produce 101, I said I was a fan of Kai,” she said. Meeting him on the show for the first time in 10 years since their debuts left her giddy: she told him, “You look the same as when you debuted.”

She reflected on winning first place on Produce 101 in 2016. “I stayed in the top spot the whole time and thought I’d debut among the top ranks,” Jeon Somi said. “When they hadn’t announced up to second place yet, my heart just dropped. I wondered, ‘Did I not make it? Did something go wrong with last week’s broadcast?’ My mind went blank, so when they finally called my name, I was overjoyed.”

When Tak Jae-hoon asked whether she expected to finish first from the start, she answered, “Of course.” She admitted the comment might sound harsh to some. “I wanted the title of ‘national center’ so badly. Because I’m mixed race, I often felt like I didn’t belong anywhere growing up. That title meant a lot to me.”
