[Sports Seoul | Reporter Wi Su-jung] Singer-actress Yoon Eun-hye has candidly discussed the psychological toll of comparing her glittering past to her current life.
Recently, Yoon uploaded a video to her YouTube channel titled When Negative Thoughts Weigh Me Down, where she answered subscribers’ questions. She said she particularly empathized with a fan who wrote that social media makes them compare themselves to others and that it hurts, and she shared her own experience in response.
Yoon recalled the period when she was repeatedly invited to international fashion shows and admitted she wasn’t immune to those feelings. Seeing glamorous posts on social media would sometimes trigger thoughts like, “I used to go to that brand,” or “I used to be like that.” Those memories made her feel small and powerless and, at times, plunged her into depression.

But she says she has moved past that sadness and adopted a new outlook. “At some point I vowed not to cling to past glories,” she told viewers. “There are many things to be grateful for in my current life. I’ve learned to enjoy the downtime I didn’t have before and to love myself.”
Yoon surprised some viewers by revealing she hasn’t bought high-end luxury goods in the past decade. “I don’t think I’ve purchased many luxury or pricey items over the last 10 years,” she said, adding, “That doesn’t make me any less happy or make me withdraw. Luxury can be a source of joy for some, but buying to measure up to others isn’t the answer.”
She urged people to focus inward: “Everyone moves at a different pace and in different ways, so it’s important to concentrate on yourself.” She offered practical advice: instead of comparing, take time to notice one thing at a time that you’re grateful for in your life right now.
Yoon debuted with first-generation idol group Baby V.O.X and became a top star with hit dramas such as Prince Hours and Coffee Prince. She now engages actively with the public through her YouTube channel and variety programs. wsj0114@sportsseoul.com
