[Sports Today reporter Im Si-ryeong] Kim Dong-wan deleted a social media post after facing mounting criticism for publicly backing MC Dingdong.
On the 22nd, Kim wrote on his social media, “I didn’t fully consider the situation before speaking. I will delete the post.”
The statement appeared to be an attempt to contain fallout from an earlier post in which he shared MC Dingdong’s account and asked, “Who would root for Dingdong for no reason?”
MC Dingdong has come under fire after allegedly assaulting a female streamer during a recent livestream. He had previously suspended entertainment activities in 2022 following a drunk-driving and hit-and-run incident. During the broadcast, when the streamer mentioned that past incident, MC Dingdong reportedly became enraged, grabbed her by the hair and assaulted her, sparking widespread backlash.
In that context, Kim’s public support drew sharp criticism online. When fans raised concerns, Kim removed the post and issued a personal apology.
Kim has repeatedly landed in controversy over recent social media remarks. Last month he drew backlash after arguing for the legalization of prostitution, saying efforts to eliminate nightlife districts have backfired and that the country is effectively becoming an entertainment district. “You can’t help but question the nightlife venues in front of churches, schools and police stations,” he said, adding that authorities should acknowledge and regulate them. He argued that with the rise of single-person households, the issue can’t simply be swept under the rug.
He subsequently set his social account to private before reopening it and resuming communication. Still, his mix of principled commentary and ill-considered remarks has kept him walking a thin line and drawing criticism.
