12 Years of Yoga: How a Korean Pop Icon Found Inner Peace

[MyDaily = Reporter Park Seo-yeon] Singer Lee Hyori explained why she began practicing yoga.

On May 10, the YouTube channel ‘A Yoga’ uploaded a video titled ‘Not Hyori, but Ananda: What yoga teachers really think.’

Lee Hyori said she started yoga for three reasons: 1) to stop shoulder pain, 2) to master impressive poses she could show off, and 3) to seek enlightenment through books. After pursuing those aims, she found none fit perfectly — it wasn’t one thing or another. She also realized her asanas weren’t strong enough to flaunt; there are many practitioners more advanced than she is, she said.

She told the hosts that yoga ultimately left her with a sense that she’d kept her life steady and secure. \”I have so much energy,\” she said. \”If I hadn’t done yoga, I don’t know where I would have put it.\” Instead, she stayed in one place, raised her dog, practiced yoga and lived a quiet, contented life — and that, she said, remained. The practice made her feel notably at ease.

When asked whether the dopamine from the outside world is strong, she agreed: \”Very strong.\” She acknowledged it’s hard not to be swayed. Still, she confessed she has practiced yoga for 12 years and joked that she’d fallen into such a healthy kind of addiction that it kept her from other, less healthy ones.

She added that she isn’t naturally the sort to stick with things and often thinks, \”This is enough,\” after trying something. Yoga, she said, changed that. It made her proud of her own persistence and bolstered her self-esteem. \”Hyori, you have this staying power?\” she found herself thinking. \”You kept moving forward even when no one was watching.\” She described yoga as that kind of presence in her life, and said it also made it harder for her to view others negatively.

Lee Hyori married musician Lee Sang-soon in 2013. In 2024, she ended an 11-year stay in Jeju and moved to Pyeongchang-dong in Seoul. She has since opened and now runs a yoga studio.
