A Chinese man who fell into despair after losing his right arm and right leg in a traffic accident has staged a remarkable comeback, competing in a bodybuilding competition and moving many who watched him.
On May 20, the Hong Kong South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that 32-year-old Ryu Sin-ju drew thunderous applause when he took part on May 10 in the 20th bodybuilding competition held in Jinan, the capital of Shandong province.
According to the SCMP, Ryu lost his right arm and right leg in the crash 10 years ago.
In the years after the accident, he retreated into depression, spending long periods confined to bed and scrolling on his phone; his eyesight also declined sharply.
A former athlete, Ryu credits his recovery to the encouragement of his family. He recently competed in the 65 kg and under division. “I just fell; I didn’t die,” he said. “I’m disabled, but as long as my heart is sound, I’ll always be healthy and happy.”
One spectator recalled that the entire hall rose in applause when Ryu stepped onto the stage. “Ryu shows honesty and optimism,” the spectator said. “His story inspires us and lights the way for many people.”
Ryu told reporters, “My greatest wish is to give back to the gym that allowed me to train for free.”
After the story spread online, commenters wrote, “He’s Superman — he deserves our respect,” and “Brother, you’re amazing. Compared with you, what I’ve been through is nothing.”
