Singer Lee Hyori opened up about what 12 years of yoga practice have taught her.

On May 10, the YouTube channel ‘Ah Yoga’ posted a video titled “Not Hyori but Ananda: What’s on yoga teachers’ minds….”
‘Ananda’ is Lee Hyori’s yoga alter ego. She has even had the name tattooed as a sign of her devotion to the practice.
She said she began yoga to ease shoulder pain and because she wanted to show off impressive poses.
She soon realized, she said, that her asanas weren’t strong enough to flaunt. What stuck with her most, she added, was that yoga helped keep her life steady and free of major troubles.
Lee Hyori said she is naturally energetic and can’t imagine how she would have channeled that energy without yoga. Ultimately, she said, what remained was a simple life: staying put, raising her dogs and practicing yoga.
She reflected that falling into such a healthy habit kept her from developing other, more destructive addictions — a relief she called fortunate.
Since last September, Lee Hyori has run a yoga studio in Yeonhui-dong, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, and she also spoke candidly about the challenges of teaching.
She said leading students through difficult poses is emotionally taxing. Watching people struggle pains her, and she wants to help them recover quickly.
She acknowledged that pain can be part of growth, based on her own experience, but admitted it’s very hard for her to simply let students suffer without intervening.
She noted that many students in the pre-dawn class have been attending since the studio opened, while the morning class still reaches only about 70 percent of its daily capacity. Managing the different groups, she said, is not easy — but she views that effort as part of her own practice.
Lee Hyori married musician Lee Sang-soon in 2013, lived on Jeju Island, and moved back to Seoul in 2024.
