A bizarre — and alarming — accident has shown that everyday appliances can pose unexpected dangers to our pets.
In Missouri, Megan Durnavant recently watched in horror as her Shih Tzu, Stonewall, nearly had his tail caught in a robotic vacuum.
Stonewall had been dozing peacefully in the living room when the vacuum’s rotating brush snagged the fur on his tail and quickly entangled him with the machine.
The panicked pup thrashed and yelped as he tried to free his tail. Megan couldn’t stop the device or free him on her own, so she dialed 911 for help.

First responders arrived and carefully disassembled the vacuum to free Stonewall. Fortunately, aside from some torn tail fur, he escaped any major injury. Still, he wore a stunned, grumpy expression for a while afterward that made onlookers feel both sympathetic and amused.
Emergency personnel at the scene said they’ve handled countless rescues but had never before freed a dog whose tail was caught in a robotic vacuum, shaking their heads at the unusual call.
Megan told reporters it felt like something out of a comedy movie — she was stunned it actually happened — and warned that households with pets should be extra cautious when using robotic vacuums.
