[MyDaily = Reporter Choi Byung-jin] Korea Football Association chairman Chung Mong-gyu pledged additional bonus payments to the national team.
On June 1, Chung said he will award extra payments each time the team advances in the 2026 FIFA CONCACAF World Cup. He pledged 1 billion KRW (≈ $750,000) for reaching the round of 32, 2 billion KRW (≈ $1,500,000) for the round of 16, and 3 billion KRW (≈ $2,250,000) for reaching the quarterfinals.
The association announced its World Cup bonus criteria on the 25th and said each member of the 26-man final roster would receive a base allowance of 50 million KRW (≈ $37,500).
Separately, the KFA set tournament bonuses at 100 million KRW (≈ $75,000) for advancing to the round of 32, 200 million KRW (≈ $150,000) for the round of 16, and 300 million KRW (≈ $225,000) for the quarterfinals. Semifinalists would receive 400 million KRW (≈ $300,000); third place, 450 million KRW (≈ $337,500); the runner-up, 500 million KRW (≈ $375,000); and the champion, 600 million KRW (≈ $450,000).
Chung said the additional payments are a personal pledge to show continued support for the national team.
Chung announced on the 29th that he would resign after the CONCACAF World Cup. Although he won a fourth term in April, controversy over the process used to appoint a national team coach after Jürgen Klinsmann prompted allegations of unfairness and a parliamentary audit. That dispute later led to legal battles between the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the KFA.
In November 2024, the ministry’s audit of the KFA flagged nine issues — including the coach appointment process, selection of team staff, and handling of the National Football Center construction project — and recommended severe disciplinary action. The KFA challenged the findings in court but lost.
With public interest waning, Chung said he chose to step down to help the organization move forward and pledged a separate personal donation to support the national team.
