After Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a second consecutive UEFA Champions League title, riots erupted across Paris, killing one person and injuring more than 200, the French Interior Ministry said on the 31st (local time). Reuters reported the unrest has reignited debate in France over street violence.
PSG won the final on the 30th in Budapest, Hungary, beating Arsenal on penalties. French authorities said violence broke out in Paris overnight after the match, leaving 57 police officers injured and leading to more than 400 arrests across the greater Paris area.
Paris police said rioters damaged parts of the city’s shopping districts and set vehicles and shared bike-rental stations on fire. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said officials also recorded damage to public buildings in some provincial cities, including Orléans.
Nuñez, a former head of the Paris police, said he led a large security operation that deployed more than 20,000 officers, systematically contained the violence, and brought the situation under control.
Marine Le Pen of the right-wing National Rally (RN) said only in France does a football victory lead to riots, and she called for tougher measures to restore law and order.
Centrist Raphaël Glucksmann warned that French society is becoming increasingly volatile and sits on tensions that could explode at any moment, identifying deep social divisions as the root cause of the unrest.
Last year, similar unrest during celebrations of PSG’s first Champions League title left two people dead.
