7 casualties reported
An explosion at the Hanwha Aerospace facility in Daejeon left 7 people dead or injured. People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk visited the site and criticized the government, saying, “This facility is clearly under the government’s management responsibility. A thorough investigation into the cause and firm measures to prevent recurrence must be carried out.”
On the afternoon of June 1, after receiving a briefing at the main gate of Hanwha Aero’s plant in Oesam-dong, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, Jang said, “Once again, a tragic accident has occurred. I offer my deepest condolences to the victims and their families.”
He pointed out that the plant is a defense site designated as a national security installation and raised questions about the government’s accountability. “Because there were fatalities here in 2018 and 2019 as well, the government needs to adopt a more responsible posture,” he said.
Jang also criticized President Lee Jae-myung directly. “After taking office, you pledged to build a country where citizens’ lives are respected,” he said. “Yet, even as this tragic loss occurred today, you appeared focused on coverage of the stock market. That is deeply disappointing and distressing.”
He added, “Shortly after the Seosomun accident, you attended a company dinner at Busan’s Jagalchi Market. The president is absent from the scenes where citizens lose their lives.” He urged, “Don’t just speak about a safe country—demonstrate responsible action at actual accident sites.”
Jang warned that, since the government has prioritized elevating South Korea into one of the world’s top 4 defense powers, authorities must ensure rigorous oversight so the accident does not undermine international confidence in domestic defense companies and their technologies.
