Lost Your Wallet or Phone in Europe? 5 Essential Steps to Secure Your Assets

Daniel Kim Views

Europe seduces travelers every year with its beauty and romance. But when you’re in an unfamiliar place, things can go sideways fast — losing the bag with your phone, wallet, and passport, or getting targeted by a pickpocket are real risks.

Here’s a clear, step-by-step emergency checklist to help you stay calm and protect yourself and your belongings while you’re abroad.

Prevent Further Loss

If your wallet and phone go missing, your priority is buying time so thieves can’t drain your accounts or run up charges.

Every minute and second matters. If you can contact family or friends back home in Korea, ask them to get your cards temporarily frozen right away. If that’s not possible, borrow a phone from your hotel reception or a nearby shop and call your card issuer to report the loss immediately.

Next, use a friend’s phone or laptop to log into your Google (Find My Device) or Apple (Find My) account. Put your device in Lost Mode and lock it remotely. Then call your Korean carrier to suspend roaming and the SIM card to block unauthorized charges and data use.

To claim travel insurance for lost items after you return or to get an emergency passport, you’ll need official documentation issued by local authorities.

1. Go to the nearest police station

Head to the police station that covers the area where the incident happened. In major tourist spots, tourist police services usually offer help in English.

2. File a theft report

When you describe what happened, insist it’s recorded as Stolen — indicating theft by another person — not Lost. Insurance companies usually require a Stolen report to process claims properly.

3. Get a police report

Obtain the original incident receipt (police report) with the officer’s signature and official stamp, and keep it safe. If the report lists your phone’s IMEI or the types of cards taken, follow-up will be much easier.

Recover Your ID

Without a passport, you can’t take cross-border trains or flights in Europe, and some hotels may refuse to check you in. You need to get your ID reissued fast.

Visit the embassy or consulate

Go to the Republic of Korea’s embassy or consulate in the country. Call or check the website first to confirm hours.

Apply for an emergency passport (single-entry)

Request an emergency passport that can be issued the same day or within 24 hours so you can continue your trip or return to Korea.

Required documents

Submit the police report you obtained, two passport photos (some missions have photo booths), a copy of your passport (use a cloud or email copy you saved), and an e-ticket copy of your flight.

If you lose your wallet and suddenly have no cash for lodging, food, or transport, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ consular services can help with emergency funds. The Emergency Overseas Transfer Support program provides local currency for urgent expenses when Korean citizens abroad face temporary hardship due to theft or loss.

At a diplomatic mission (embassy or consulate), you can apply for support. A family member or friend in Korea deposits won into a Ministry-designated account. Once the deposit is confirmed, the embassy gives you the equivalent amount in local currency on the spot—up to the equivalent of $3,000 USD. It’s a crucial option for handling a serious emergency in Europe.
